Biography of John H. Cox

John Cox, 61, was born, raised and educated in Chicago and resides with his family in San Diego County, California.

His mother, Priscilla, raised John on her own after his biological father walked out on them both shortly after John’s birth. A graduate of University of California at Berkeley with undergraduate and masters degrees she taught in the public schools while they lived on Chicago’s tough south side in a small apartment.

John’s mother later remarried, and his stepfather, Thomas Cox, was a lifelong postal employee. Both of them often spoke of the corruption, waste and inefficiency in the public school system and in the post office - both government-run monopolies. John’s mother, a staunch Democrat and union member, often decried the patronage system in Chicago and the corruption of the Daley machine that harmed her schools. John ran for delegate to the Democratic convention in 1976, on a slate opposing the Daley political machine.

John attended the University of Illinois at Chicago, graduating with honors and a degree in Accounting and Political Science. While attending night school at ITT/Chicago Kent College of Law (where he graduated at the top of his class in 1980), John landed his first job as a CPA with the accounting firm of Coopers and Lybrand (now PriceWaterhouse Coopers).

In February of 1981, he founded his law and accounting firms. He later opened an investment advisory firm (Cox Financial Group, Ltd), a real estate management company (Equity Property Management LLC) and a venture capital firm (Financial Equity Associates, Inc). He has built these businesses from scratch to having assets of over $200 million with almost 100 employees over the past 35 years.

In the 1990's, John led the investment group that purchased Jays Foods, a major regional food manufacturer, saving over 600 local jobs. He recruited and led a team of managers who turned a $17 million loss into a $3 million profit in less than a year.

He has served on a local school board, a zoning board and on the boards of charities in Illinois such as the USO, American Cancer Society, Boy’s Hope/Girls Hope and United Charities.

John believes in community service and neighbors helping one another, having founded an affiliate of Rebuilding Together, a nationwide organization that repairs the homes of low income seniors and disabled persons. Since its founding in 1991 by John, this organization has repaired over 1,000 homes and involved almost 20,000 volunteers.

John currently sits on the board of the USO San Diego and the Restorative Justice Mediation Project in San Diego. He is on the executive committee of the USO, and also a member of the Lincoln Club of San Diego as well as the New Majority San Diego.

John is the father of four daughters. He and his wife, the former Sarah Hall are active in and attend Nativity Catholic Church.
