Garamendi Grandstands On Budget Cuts...Again

Lt. Governor 'Talks the talk,' But Doesn't 'Walk the Walk' On Student Fee Increases

"Like déjà vu, Lt. Governor Garamendi is once again spreading the doom and gloom scenarios for students if Governor Schwarzenegger's proposed spending cuts take place. However, Garamendi's history of failing to act when he had the chance only goes to show that these latest remarks are nothing more than lip service.

"Garamendi was absent during the Trustee and Regent fee increase votes of both the California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) in March 2007 after vehemently denouncing the proposed fee increases. Just months after taking office, Garamendi did not even show up to the crucial meetings where the fee increases he vowed to fight were approved.

"Garamendi's formula for hypocrisy on the issue of student fee increases and spending cuts is at work once again. Yet this time around, Garamendi is enlisting college students, who have jobs and classes to attend, to do the fighting for him. Garamendi has truly perfected the plan of simply 'talking the talk,' while having others ‘walk the walk.'"

Lt. Gov. Garamendi Encourages Fresno Students to Protest Spending Cuts

"Garamendi and the educators urged students to let Gov. Schwarzenegger and the Legislature know that education cutbacks would be a mistake. "I hope you take this information and get really upset, really angry," Garamendi said." Garamendi Promises To Stop Tuition And Fee Increases
"As Lt. Governor, I will sit on the Board of Regents of the University of California and I will be the Trustee of the California State University System....  We must stop the ever increasing tuition and fee increases that make it impossible for many quality students to go to college."

The "Very Active Regent and Trustee" Skipped Both UC and CSU Meetings, Yet Issues Statement Denouncing Student Fee Hikes
"Lt. Governor issued a statement today calling the fee hikes at the University of California and Cal State University System 'an unfair tax on California's youth, and a dangerously shortsighted move.'  California, he said, has a 'moral obligation to invest in our future generations.'  Yet Garamendi skipped a vote yesterday by the UC Board of Regents that raised college fees 7%, and he missed the Cal State University trustee meeting that hiked fees 10%."
