California Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring Issues Statement Concerning Sen. Barack Obama's Failure To Disavow Campaign Surrogate Ed Schultz' Remarks

California Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring today issued the following statement concerning Senator Barack Obama's failure to disavow inflamatory statements against Senator John McCain by Obama campaign surrogate and radio talk show host Ed Schultz:

"Barack Obama's words and promises are beginning to look more and more like his resume - empty. By failing to disavow inflamatory comments by his campaign surrogate, talk show host Ed Schultz, Obama has proven his calls for a new, civil politics to be false and his embrace of old-style, dirty trick politicking to be full.

"Obama has an obligation to live up to his promises and elevate the debate by personally and unequivicolly denouncing the character attacks against John McCain by Schultz, made at a campaign rally attended by Obama.

"Now is the time for Obama to prove he is willing to live up to his calls for a departure from the 'negative campaigning of the past.'"

Last Night, Obama Surrogate, Liberal Talk Radio Host Ed Schultz, Called Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) A "Warmonger":

Obama Surrogate Talk Radio Host Ed Schultz Warmed Up Crowd By Calling Sen. McCain "A Warmonger." "But Mr. Schultz, a supporter of Senator Barack Obama, may have gone too far late Friday when he called Senator John McCain 'a warmonger.' Mr. Schultz made the remarks while revving up a group of Obama supporters at a $100-a-head fund raiser at the North Dakota Democratic Party's convention in Grand Forks." (Larry Rohter, "McCain Called A 'Warmonger' At Obama Event," The New York Times' "The Caucus" Blog, https://mail.cagop.org/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/05/mccain-called-a-warmonger-at-obama-event/, 4/5/08)

Obama Campaign Response: Through A Spokeswoman, No Renouncing Of Ed Schultz And Wink And Nod To Smear Attacks:

Obama Spokeswoman Jen Psaki: "John McCain is not a warmonger and should not be described as such. He's a supporter of a war that Sen. Obama believes should have never been authorized and never been waged." (Sunlen Miller and Jan Simmonds, "Obama Backer Calls McCain A 'Warmonger'," ABC News' "Political Radar" Blog, blogs.abcnews.com, 4/5/08)

NBC News: "The Obama Campaign Didn't Condemn Schultz's Remark..." "As mentioned earlier, the Obama campaign didn't condemn Schultz's remark, but issued this statement: 'John McCain is not a warmonger and should not be described as such. He's a supporter of a war that Senator Obama believes should have never been authorized and never been waged.'" (Mark Murray, "McCain On The 'Warmonger' Remark," MSNBC's "First Read" Blog, firstread.msnbc.msn.com, 4/5/08)

CONTRAST: Sen. McCain Immediately Repudiated Controversial Remarks At An Event Earlier This Year:

Sen. McCain Immediately Denounced Controversial Comments From Bill Cunningham That Took Place At An Event In February Of 2008. "Republican John McCain quickly denounced the comments of a radio talk show host who while warming up a campaign crowd referred repeatedly to Barack Hussein Obama and called the Democratic presidential candidate a 'hack, Chicago-style' politician. Hussein is Obama's middle name, but talk show host Bill Cunningham used it three times as he addressed the crowd before the likely Republican nominee's appearance." (Liz Sidoti, "McCain Disavows Radio Talk Show Host's Harsh Obama Comments," The Associated Press, 2/26/08)

NOTE: Sen. McCain Was Not On Stage During The Remarks And Did Not Hear Them. "The Republican frontrunner wasn't on the stage when Cunningham was spewing and said he didn't hear him speak and said he had never met the man. Still, said McCain, it's his campaign and he would take responsibility for it. 'I will not tolerate anything in this campaign that denigrates either Sen. Obama or Sen. (Hillary) Clinton,' McCain told reporters." (Editorial, "A Tasteless Introduction To Cincinnati," The Cincinnati Enquirer, 2/27/08)

  • The Cincinnati Enquirer: "McCain showed class by repudiating Cunningham's disparaging remarks about Barack Obama." (Editorial, "A Tasteless Introduction To Cincinnati," The Cincinnati Enquirer, 2/27/08)

AUDACITY OF HYPOCRISY: Obama Previously Claimed He Does Not Want To Engage In "Slash And Burn, Negative Campaigning Of The Past":

Obama: "We've got to get beyond the small politics ... the slash and burn politics that have become the custom in Washington." ("Obama Denounces 'Slash And Burn' Politics," The Associated Press, 2/19/07)

Obama: "We don't want the small, timid, slash and burn, negative campaigning of the past." (Josh Hafenbrack, "Obama Barack Obama Calls For New Political Spirit During South Florida Campaign Swing," [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Sun Sentinel, 3/26/07)

Obama: "I know that in Washington it is acceptable to say or do anything it takes to get elected, but I really don't think that is the kind of politics that is good for our party, and I don't think it is good for our country, and I think that the American people will reject it in this election."
