NÚÑEZ: THE FRENCH SOMMELIER

Posted: Thursday, December 13, 2007

"As one of California's highest ranking elected officials and a leader of his party, one would expect that Fabian Núñez would be out promoting California's business and products, rather than having a Democratic party spokesman insult our wine industry in his defense.

"If Núñez spent less time on his junkets to Switzerland, México, Germany, Spain and France, he would have realized that California wines rank among the best in the world.

"With a $14 billion state deficit and reports of a softening economy, Núñez should reconsider his role as the sommelier of the French."

Hector M. Barajas, Communication Director, California Republican Party

California Wines Not "Fancy" Enough For Democrats

"The state Democratic Party generally buys California wines, but ‘every once in a while you get fancy.'"  (Nancy Vogel, "Democratic Party Buys Wine From Núñez," The Los Angeles Times, 12/13/07)

California Wines Beat the French - Again

"Who says California wines don't age?  The French do. Repeatedly.  Yet Gaul is biting its tongue today after California smoked France Wednesday in a cross-continental tasting of wines that have matured in cellars for three decades. The California Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines placed first through fifth, followed by four wines from France's hallowed Bordeaux region and then another California Cab." (Linda Murphy, "California Wines Beat The French - Again," The San Francisco Chronicle, 5/26/07)

French Wine Experts Deem California Wines The Best

"Thirty years ago, California's Napa Valley cabernets and chardonnays went head-to-head with France's Bordeauxs and white Burgundies in a blind, comparative taste test in Paris.  Wine lovers worldwide, and especially stateside, were stunned when the panel of nine French wine experts deemed California wines the best. A 1973 Stag's Leap cabernet sauvignon was named the top red, and a Chateau Montelena chardonnay of the same year was named the top white....  But the French were quick to dismiss the results, vowing that California's wines would never age. After maturing for three decades, California wineries got a second chance to prove themselves at the re-enactment of the ‘Judgment of Paris.' History has a way of repeating itself.  California's wines trumped the French wines once more."  (Mikeka Lincoln, "A Vintage Victory For California," ABC News, 5/25/06)
