Statement by CRP Chairman Ron Nehring Concerning the Selection of Delegates to the 2008 Republican National Convention
Posted: Thursday, November 8, 2007
The Republican National Committee has found California and 50 other states and territories to be in compliance with RNC rules concerning the selection of our delegates to the 2008 Republican National Convention in Minneapolis. California will send 173 delegates to the national convention September 1 – 4 in Minneapolis.
Concurrently, the RNC has found 5 states to be out of compliance: New Hampshire, Florida, South Carolina, Michigan, and Wyoming. States selecting delegates to the national convention prior to the February 5, 2008 ‘window’ will see their delegation cut by 50%. Mathematically, this has the effect of increasing the proportion of convention body from those states that will send full delegations.
The states impacted and the number of delegates they stand to lose are: Florida (57), Michigan (30), South Carolina (23), Wyoming (14) and New Hampshire (12). Total: 136.
Today’s action highlights the need for a serious effort at reforming the presidential primary schedule and rules for 2012 to ensure all Republicans, regardless of the state in which they live, are fully represented in our nomination process.
I commend Governor Schwarzenegger and our legislators for ensuring California’s primary date is in compliance with national party rules, ensuring the Golden State is fully represented as we nominate the next President of the United States.
