Statement By California Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring Concerning Hillary Clinton's Second Library Lockdown

Posted: Tuesday, November 6, 2007

(SACRAMENTO) - California Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring released the following statement regarding Hillary Clinton's second library lockdown:

"Hillary Clinton finds herself in yet another library controversy.  How does Clinton expect to win the presidential election based on her experience when the people of California are kept in the dark about her work in the White House?

"Only Hillary Clinton could take something as innocent as a presidential library and turn it into a controversy, once again embracing intense secrecy and calculation to avoid transparency or public scrutiny.  Californians are sick of it."

SECOND LIBRARY ON LOCKDOWN

University Of Arkansas Claims Records Not Processed After Implying That The Project Was Complete

The Diane Blair Papers Remain Locked Down In Another Arkansas Library:

Papers Pertaining To Hillary Will Not Be Available Until 2009, Despite Indications That They Should Have Already Been Released. "[Q]uestions are being raised about why another set of papers relevant to [Sen. Clinton's] political career at yet another Arkansas library will not be available to the public until well after Election Day 2008, despite earlier indications that the papers would have been released by now." (Jake Tapper, "Clinton Papers Won't Be Released Until After Election," ABC News, 11/6/07)

  • "Those Papers Were Written By Diane Blair, A Close Friend Of Bill And Hillary Clinton, Who Taught And Engaged In Arkansas Politics Until Her Death Due To Lung Cancer In 2000." (Jake Tapper, "Clinton Papers Won't Be Released Until After Election," ABC News, 11/6/07)

Diane Blair Was A Close Friend, Campaign Staffer, And Confidant To The Clintons:

"[D]iane Blair, An Early Member Of The Defense Team And Hillary's Closest Friend In Arkansas." (Jeff Gerth and Don Van Natta Jr., Her Way, 2007, p. 92)

Blair Wrote A Report On The "Defense Team" During The 1992 Presidential Election. "Hillary's dear friend, Diane Blair, conceived of the need to write a final chapter for history. She broached the idea with the Clintons, and they immediately agreed. Exchanging her campaign strategist hat for the one she wore as a political science professor, Blair diligently interviewed senior campaign aides, including members of the Defense Team. Her questions, based on extensive preparation, elicited candid remarks from aides who trusted her. She chronicled the highs and lows of a dogged campaign and quickly generated a mountain of insightful information. In the end, she compiled her lengthy report - the introduction alone numbered thirty pages - into 'big bound volumes.'" (Jeff Gerth and Don Van Natta Jr., Her Way, 2007, p. 103)

The University Of Arkansas Claims That The Diane Blair Records Have Not Yet Been Processed, Despite Annual Reports Indicating Otherwise:

"Last Month The University Of Arkansas Announced That The Blair Papers Would Not Be Made Public Until 2009." (Jake Tapper, "Clinton Papers Won't Be Released Until After Election," ABC News, 11/6/07)

  • Librarian Says Papers Are Not Processed. "Andrea Cantrell, the head of research services at the university library's Special Collections, told reporters that the Papers were not yet processed." (Jake Tapper, "Clinton Papers Won't Be Released Until After Election," ABC News, 11/6/07)

However, 2005-2006 Annual Report From Library Indicates That The Processing Of The Records Was "Nearing Completion." "In its 2005-2006 University Libraries annual report ... the University of Arkansas reported that the process was almost done. 'Archivists were hired to process both the Diane Blair Papers and the records of former third district Congressman Asa Hutchinson, and both collections are nearing completion.'" (Jake Tapper, "Clinton Papers Won't Be Released Until After Election," ABC News, 11/6/07)

Also, In 2006, The University Of Arkansas Library Implied That The Diane Blair Project Was Complete. "[T]he University Of Arkansas Library Newsletter ... in 2006, implied the job has been completed, describing [archivist Kerry] Jones as having 'previously processed the papers of the late Diane Blair.'" (Jake Tapper, "Clinton Papers Won't Be Released Until After Election," ABC News, 11/6/07)
