APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN MARK LENO'S "CONVENIENT FUNDRAISER"
Currently, nearly 600 bills sit on the Assembly Appropriations Suspense File. Their fate rests in the hands of one man: Committee Chair Mark Leno.
Conveniently, Chairman Leno has a fundraiser scheduled the night before Thursday's suspense hearing. It seems Assemblyman Leno and Senator Migden have more in common then we thought.
"When she was chairwoman of the powerful Assembly appropriations committee, which determines whether hundreds of bills live or die, Migden routinely held fundraisers during committee lunch breaks, the San Francisco Chronicle reported." (Contra Costa Times, 5/27/07)

"Midgen Routinely Held Fundraisers During Committee Lunch Breaks"
"When she was chairwoman of the powerful Assembly appropriations committee, which determines whether hundreds of bills live or die, Migden routinely held fundraisers during committee lunch breaks, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. That's legal, but it raised ethical issues." (Steve Harmon, "Migden's Highway Adventure Not First Taste Of Controversy," Contra Costa Times, 5/28/07)
Appropriations Committee Goes Through Suspense Files On Thursday
"On Thursday, the appropriations committee in each house will go through the methodical process of voting on their suspense files - long lists of fiscal bills that have been set aside to be acted on at the same hearing." (Steve Lawrence, "State Legislature Faces 'Suspense' - Filled Week," The Salinas Californian, 5/29/07)
Outcomes Usually "Decided by The Committee's Chairs"
"The outcomes are usually preordained, decided by the committee's chairs and other Democratic leaders before the committees vote." (Steve Lawrence, "State Legislature Faces 'Suspense' - Filled Week," The Salinas Californian, 5/29/07)
