Gov.Schwarzenegger Issues Statement on Medal of Honor Recipient, Petty Officer Second Class (SEAL) Michael A. Monsoor
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today released the following statement in recognition of Petty Officer Second Class (SEAL) Michael A. Monsoor of Garden Grove , CA , who has been awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously:
"Petty Officer Michael Monsoor will be remembered forever as one of California ’s bravest sons. He fought to defend our country with selflessness, courage and unwavering patriotism. It is with deep gratitude and respect that we pay tribute to Michael’s heroic sacrifice, for which he rightfully has been decorated with the U.S. Military’s highest award for valor — the Medal of Honor."
Petty Officer Monsoor received the Medal of Honor posthumously in a ceremony at the White House earlier today. Monsoor is the first Navy service member to receive the Medal of Honor for combat in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is the first California resident, the second Navy service member and the fourth member of the armed services to receive the Medal of Honor for combat in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
Petty Officer Monsoor died Sept. 29, 2006, of injuries sustained while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Ramadi , Iraq . More information on Petty Officer Monsoor can be found at http://www.navy.mil/moh/monsoor/.
