Press ReleaseChairman Nehring's Thanksgiving Message![]() Posted: Wednesday, November 21, 2007 On October 3, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving Day a national holiday.
Thanksgiving is an American holiday that usually brings to mind families and friends gathered around a table and enjoying a roasted turkey, pumpkin pie, while catching a glimpse of the NFL game. This is a holiday rooted in human struggle, courage, and commitment to the freedom to practice one's faith. As did the pilgrims, today we express our gratitude for the blessings we enjoy in both times of calm and challenge.
Thanksgiving is a day we remember the less fortunate among us. We remember the courageous firefighters and the families affected by the recent fires, and our neighbors who recently experienced massive floods and the loss of life. This can be a challenging time for our men and women in uniform. Our liberty and freedom do not come without cost, and sacrifice. We ask that God look over our valiant members of our Armed Forces, at home and abroad. May they be given the strength and courage to carry out their mission of defending peace. On this Thanksgiving Day, we remember the sacrifices of so many, so that we may enjoy the freedom to share this day with our families and friends. Ron Nehring
