Democrats Oppose Drug Testing for Welfare Recipients, Support Giving Food Stamps to Drug Felons
Democrats on the Assembly Human Services Committee today showed just how out of touch they are by rejecting a Republican-authored measure (Assembly Bill 2389, by Assemblyman John J. Benoit, R-Bermuda Dunes) that would mandate random drug tests for welfare recipients. Even in the face of a young man, R.J. Feild, who was scarred for life at the hands of a mother who used her welfare payments for drugs, Democrats went out of their way to deny this reasonable approach to detecting drug abuse. R.J. was born only weighing two pounds, with traces of heroin, marijuana, cocaine, meth and alcohol in his body, and will live his entire life dealing with the effects of cerebral palsy. Some Democrats even went so far as to cite California's budget problems as an excuse for their refusal to support tough protections for our kids, saying it would cost the state too much money. "We're in a budget shortfall, we don't have any money." Assemblyman Mike Davis, D-Los Angeles Moments later in the very same hearing, Democrats voted to pass a measure (Assembly Bill 1996, by Assemblyman Sandré Swanson, D-Oakland) giving food stamps to convicted drug criminals in California, including drug traffickers and dealers. It's time for Democrats to get their priorities straight.
