Gov. Schwarzenegger Signs Legislation to Protect Students in Vocational Education

Posted: Thursday, July 12, 2007

Today, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed AB 1525 by Assemblymember Paul Cook (R-Yucaipa) to maintain a level of oversight and protection over students in private postsecondary and vocational education.

"I want to congratulate the legislature for working collaboratively with my administration since last year to protect students in private postsecondary and vocational education," said Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. "This bill is the first step in a comprehensive reform to offer students much needed protection they deserve. We continue to work diligently with the legislature on the larger reform measure that will strike a balance of protecting students while streamlining an overly burdensome regulatory structure."

AB 1525 will protect the interests of students and private postsecondary institutions that have any matters pending before the Bureau of Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education (BPPVE) until a more comprehensive reform is enacted.

Information to help students choose a school can be found on the BPPVE web site, which is being maintained by Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) during this interim phase. Several common sense tips can be found at: www.bppve.ca.gov/students_consumers.htm.
